Sunflower – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

SunflowerBest known for his impishly charming roles in romantic works like My Little Bride and Rooftop Room Cat, Korean Wave star Kim Rae Won breaks from mold to portray a troubled gangster in the box office hit Sunflower. Although he also played a gangster in his previous film Mr. Socrates, Kim’s role in Sunflower is a lot more challenging, and a big step away from the lighthearted image viewers have come to associate him with. At the core of this action melodrama is a tragic character study of a conflicted man with a violent past, and Kim Rae Won makes the character his own, giving the role the necessary inner life to connect with the audience. He stars opposite veteran actress Kim Hae Suk and newcomer Heo Yi Jae (Dirty Carnival), who help his character start anew in life. Sunflower also marks a new venture for director Kang Seok Beom, who previously worked mainly in comedy, having directed Mr. Handy and written for My Boss, My Teacher. Growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, Tae Sik (Kim Rae Won) dropped out of school at a young age and spent much of his time fighting in back alleys before landing in prison. Ten years later, Tae Sik is released from prison and ready to start over. He returns to his hometown, seeking refuge with an adoptive mother (Kim Hae Suk) and her sassy daughter (Heo Yi Jae) at their restaurant Sunflower. Finding a family at last, Tae Sik begins to let go of all the emotions and anger bottled up within, and vows to never fight again. But the people from his past are not ready to let him go..

Hot for Teacher (Who Slept With Her) – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

Hot for TeacherStrict teachers, all those hours inside four walls, all your desires and youthful energy repressed. School is an endless drag – until she comes along. Uhm Ji Young (Kim Sa Rang of A Love to Kill) has a perfect body and metric tons of sex appeal, and she knows it. Needless to say, all the students go crazy, and the male teachers too! They should be preparing for the annual school festival, but they’re all occupied with other matters. Then a scandal erupts. The three major suspects are the school’s trio of professional playboys, Kim Tae Yo (Ha Suk Jin of See You After School), Bae Jae Sung (Park Jun Kyu of My Wife is a Gangster 2), and Ahn Myung Seop (Ha Dong Hoon of My Boss, My Teacher). A particularly strict teacher is after them. His mission: find out who slept with her?

Sexy comedies have been very popular since the advent of Sex is Zero a few years ago, but recently this particular genre has suffered a little from lack of ideas and frankly lack of sexiness. Director Kim Yoo Sung, who worked as assistant on the hilarious comedy Wet Dreams and the SF blockbuster Natural City, goes straight for the kill with the alluring Kim Sa Rang, who effortlessly carries the role of the young student teacher at the center of everyone’s attention. Rounding up Hot For Teacher (a.k.a. Who Slept With Her?) are comedy regulars like Lee Hyuk Jae, Ha Dong Hoon (Haha), and Park Jun Kyu in what looks to be the perfect escape valve if you’re looking for a couple of hours of good fun.

The Evil Twin – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

The Evil TwinIn South Korea, summer is the season for horror films, and the first to hit theaters in 2007 was Kim Ji Hwan’s directorial debut, The Evil Twin. A rare entry into the historical horror genre, this Joseon period chiller offers a horrifying interpretation of the classic Cinderella story of Kongji and Patzzi. One of the most promising young actresses in Korea, teenaged television starlet Park Shin Hye from Palace S and Trees in Heaven takes on her first leading film role, and she adeptly captures the polar personalities of her two characters, playing both the innocent and the evil with equal convince. The film co-stars Jae Hee (3-iron) and Yang Geum Suk.

Ten years ago, twin sisters So Yeon and Hyo Jin (Park Shin Hye) both fell into a river, claiming the life of Hyo Jin and leaving So Yeon comatose. Ten years later, So Yeon finally wakes up. Though she has lost her memory, she is troubled by what she can’t remember, and often shows characteristics similar to her dead sister. As she recovers, the past slowly returns – the circumstances of the accident, the sisters’ jealous rivalry over So Yeon’s husband-to-be Hyun Sik (Jae Hee) – and a series of mysterious murders befalls the village.

Mr. Lee Vs. Mr. Lee – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

Mr. Lee Vs. Mr. LeeHappy families are all alike, but unhappy families are a totally different story, as can be seen in director Shim Kwang Jin’s 2006 film Mr. Lee vs. Mr. Lee (a.k.a. Long Day’s Journey into Night). The “Mr. Lee” in the title refers to both the protagonist and the lead, veteran actor Lee Dae Geun. Having appeared in some 300 films in his 40-year career, Lee is known for his masculine image and is fondly remembered as a sex symbol by older audience members. In Mr. Lee vs. Mr. Lee, however, he departs from this well-established screen personae, showing both age and vulnerability as an aged father seeking reconciliation. His performance earned him a Best Leading Actor nomination at the 44th Daejong Awards. Loosely based on the play “Happy Family” and Lee Dae Geun’s own life experiences, Mr. Lee vs. Mr. Lee builds an exceptional drama with pointed dialogue, pacing, and storytelling, spinning a theatrical character study into so much more.

For the third anniversary of his wife’s death, elderly widower Mr. Lee (Lee Dae Geun) hopes to gather his family together for a reunion. This task, however, is easier said than done. His children haven’t visited in three years, and they are a bitter lot, with plenty of their own problems to deal with. His eldest son (Lee Doo Il) is going through a rather nasty divorce, his daughter (Ahn Seon Young) gets held up by a car accident, and his youngest son has been MIA since he went bankrupt a couple years ago. As the estranged family gathers for the memorial, the words and secrets that spill out may make or break their already fragile bonds.

I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

Im CyborgWith his masterful, multi -award -winning vengeance trilogy, Park Chan Wook won accolades at home and abroad, and became the object of cult for many film fans, from the grindhouse aficionado to the arthouse purist. Following the anger and violence of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and Old Boy, however, Park was ready for something new – a romantic comedy, albeit one like no other. For his first film about love and happiness, the director enlisted versatile actress Lim Soo Jung (Lump Sugar, Tale of Two Sisters) and film newcomer Jung Ji Hoon, better known to fans across Asia as Rain, as his mentally ill romantic leads. A cyborg romantic comedy starring Rain? If anyone can pull it off, it’s Park Chan Wook. After all, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK.

After attempting suicide, Young Goon (Lim Soo Jung) ends up in an asylum, outfitted with retro accessories, concerned doctors, and plenty of quirky patients. Young Goon’s problem? She thinks she’s a cyborg. Her bigger problem? A cyborg can’t eat human food. Refusing to eat, she spends all her rapidly depleting energy communicating with her machine friends (like the coffee vending machine), plotting against the doctors, and trying to recharge herself with batteries. The cute and quirky Young Goon immediately attracts the attention of asylum mate Il Soon (Jung Ji Hoon), a young man with a knack for stealing. He can steal anything, even Thursday, and his specialty is stealing other people’s skills. Recognizing that Young Goon is in trouble, the love-struck Il Soon tries his hardest to help her eat again, bringing both of them onto a path of romance and healing.

Perhaps the most irreverent of all Park Chan Wook films, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK is a delight for the eyes, and much more than a simple romantic comedy. It features the usual stylish innuendo and eye-grabbing visuals of Park’s past works, but with a markedly different, more light-hearted sense of humor. The film is whimsically surreal and often laugh-out-loud funny. Although the talent of Lim Soo Jung is certainly not a surprise, it’s Rain who raises eyebrows with this role. One of Asia’s biggest pop stars, Rain has also found success and popularity as a television actor with dramas like Sang Doo, Let’s Go to School and Full House, but the verdict on his acting skills was still open. If anything, I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK proves that with the right guidance Rain can truly become a fine actor, and that Park Chan Wook still has many more surprises under his belt.

Hello God – Korean Movie – English Sub DVD

Hello GodFor much of the 1980s, the formidable trio of director Bae Chang Ho, actor Ahn Sung Ki, and writer Choi In Ho dominated Korean cinema, garnering critical and popular acclaim alike with a series of outstanding films. Starting with 1983′s Flower on the Equator, Bae and company went on to deliver some of the most successful films of the 1980s like Whale Hunting, Deep Blue Night, Do the Right Thing, Hwang Jin Yi, and 1987′s Hello, God. Bae excels at achieving a tender balance of commercial and artistic sensibilities that strikes the right chord with viewers, and Hello, God quietly enthralls with its wry humor, socially conscious storytelling, and lyrical humanism, along with Yoo Yong Kil’s beautiful cinematography and the poetic screenplay from Choi In Ho, one of Korea’s most prominent writers.

A spiritual follow-up to Whale Hunting and Whale Hunting 2, Hello, God again follows the misfit journey of a troubled woman and two men named Byung Tae and Min Woo. Ahn Sung Ki stars as Byung Tae, a man afflicted with cerebral palsy, while Jeon Mu Song (Garden of Heaven) plays a wandering poet. They are joined on the road by an unmarried pregnant woman portrayed by Kim Bo Yeon, who also appeared in Bae’s People of the Slum. Unlikely companions in this pilgrimage of loss and discovery, together they head towards Gyeongju, where the ancient astronomical observatory Cheomseongdae is located.
