NASA’s LCROSS Moon Crashing, Successful?
NASA’s LCROSS stands for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite. This mission is to see if moon has water in the form of ice. The process was done by sending an empty rocket hull that would normally be space junk remained attached to the plucky little LCROSS until pulling away. On Friday morning, it smashed into a crater near the moon’s south pole.
Then the little satellite flew through what was supposed to be a six-mile plume of dust from the crash, taking pictures and measuring all sorts of stuff, mostly looking for water. Moments after the first crash, the smaller spacecraft itself hit the moon for a second impact.
The crashes created a man-made crater about one-fifth the size of a football field. (source: Associated Press)
But why is it that NASA needs to know if there is water mixed in lunar soil?
Actually, NASA can put a base in the moon then making use of the water found at it. Explorers can drink that water or else the hydrogen can be extracted from it and will be used as fuel.
