ON2 Technologies is said to be the leading developer of the video compression technology. And Google eyed an advantage with the technology for the Google products, and is now currently in a deal to acquire it.

I am not actually interested of how much is the deal, which according to the report is in per stock basis that will worth a $106.5 million. What I really wonder is that how can Google use this for their own products.

On the press release, Google seems planning to incorporate the video compression of ON2 which is known as VP6 into their web products. Is it for the YouTube or for other and future web products of Google.

“Today video is an essential part of the web experience, and we believe high-quality video compression technology should be a part of the web platform,” said Sundar Pichai, vice president, Product Management, Google. “We are committed to innovation in video quality on the web, and we believe that On2’s team and technology will help us further that goal.”

There is also an speculation that after this acquiring transaction, the license fee for the use of the VP6 will be waived by Google and it will be sent to open source.

There are observers also who think negatively. They said that Google might not be planning to use the VP6 technology and that Google just want to purchase this product and kill it just like what Google did to other technology it bought before.

One of the speculations over the issue is that Google Voice product and similar products like with that of Skype directly compete with the AT&T’s own wireless voice service. And the addition of Google Voice to the iPhone under AT&T will result into the degradation of their own product.

Today, it is reported that the FCC through James Schlichting wrote letter to both the AT&T and Apple, asking the two companies to explain why Apple rejected the Google Voice product for the Apple’s iPhone. Part of the letter says:

Did Apple act alone, or in consultation with AT&T, in deciding to reject the Google Voice application and related applications? If the latter, please describe the communications between Apple and AT&T in connection with the decision to reject Google Voice.

Google also has been requested by the FCC to explain how the Google Voice operate through an iPhone

No wonder that Microsoft is trying to do some steps to directly compete Google. Although Google is doing the same to Micrsoft but it seems that Microsoft is so serious about it that there came a time that Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo just to get its technology that might kill Google.

Now, I understand why.

With the report that Mark Lucovsky, an Engineering Director, is leaving Google for VMware, the story about the incident happened between Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmerand Mark Lucovsky before surfaced as told by MG Siegler of Techcrunch.

But Lucovsky may be best known for the role he played in a complete and utter meltdown that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer once had. As the NT architect, Lucovsky was clearly pretty vital to Microsoft, so when he went in for a meeting with Ballmer in 2004 to let him know he was leaving, you can be sure the CEO was a bit on edge.

“Just tell me it’s not Google,” Ballmer reportedly said according to court documents (for a case surrounding another Google ex-Microsoft hire). When Lucovsky said it was Google, Ballmer allegedly picked up a chair and threw it across the room.

What he apparently said next, will live on forever in Internet history.

“Fucking Eric Schmidt is a fucking pussy. I’m going to fucking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I’m going to fucking kill Google.”

Schmidt, is of course, Google’s CEO. When Lucovsky still wasn’t convinced, Ballmer alledgedly went on to say, “Google’s not a real company. It’s a house of cards.”

So up to this time, Microsoft still hates Google.

Since the launching of Microsoft’s Bing on June 2009, its market share in the US is continuously increasing.

According to the reports, Bing initially got 7.81% market share in the US and it increases to 8.23%. And many techy people who are observing the trend believed that it will be stealing more market shares from Google, especially that Bing started to include the tweets on its search results.

However, when Michael Jackson died, Bing users started to learn the failures of Microsoft’s Bing. Bing just couldn’t cope with the demands of its users on the fresh news updates through its search results.

Bing’s Jacquelyn Krones stated that, “By most reports, Bing did not deliver the best experience for our customers soon after TMZ posted the news on their blog, …As Search Engine Journal pointed out, we had the story but it was hidden at the bottom of the main page and even deeper in our xRank result.“
